General Information

Geography - Hydrography

The main hydrographic axis, which traverses the Ampezzo valley from north to south is drained by the Boite river.  Many secondary basins of different width converge with this river. On the orographic right, in order are; Ruoibes de Inze - Ruoibes de Fora, Fanes – Travenanzes – Ra Vales, Rutorgo – Ru de Roncàto, Costeana – Ru de Formìn – Rio Falzarego, Ru da Comin, Ru d’Ortié; on the orographic left, in order are; Felizon – Rufiédo – Ru Bosco, Ru de Tamarìn – Ruoiba, Rio Bigontina – Ru de ra Jères  -  Ru de Pecol.

Ampezzo water courses flow through canyons and gorges and sink between narrow and deep rocky walls for at least 14 kilometres of their total length. The main and most famous canyons are those of  Rio Travenanzes – Ru de Ra Vales – Rio Fanes,  of  Felizon – Ru Bosco and  Ru d’Ortié, so beautiful and fascinating  yet little known and wild.

Alternatively, some stretches of water courses flow, on  alluvial plains or cones with huge mounds of detrital Dolomite sediments and extensive gravel beds . Among the most significant alluvial plains are the following:  the central part of Val Travenanzes, that of the Felizon torrent in Pian del Foràme and that of the Boite at the confluence with the  Felizon at Fiames. Among the most conspicuous alluvial cones are that of  Ru de Colfiédo at the foot of Croda Rossa and that of  Ru de ra Jères at the foot of Mt. Cristallo.
